The two channel video Loosely based on real events explores questions about place and how place is fabricated. Is a place governed by architectural design, history and naming or can urban legends, rumors and misunderstandings play a role in its construction?
The work takes its starting point in the legendary winter of 1954 when the Bosphorus allegedly froze over allowing people to walk across it to the other side and investigates how hearsay information circulating at the time can still make an impact on our memories and understanding of place today.
The work consists of archival material, photographs and retold testimonies and can be seen as an inquiry into the partial reality behind an urban myth and at the same time considers how an incident which is fixed in our collective social memory effects the creation of the idea of place and our history.
