3 Artists Incorporating Ecological Elements in Their Works

Posted in

The human-nature relationship continues to shape the conceptual worlds of artists as one of the most striking and profound themes in contemporary art. This relationship is re-examined through various artistic practices, questioning the power of nature and the effects of human intervention. Artists who explore the mutual interactions and conflicts between nature and humanity invite viewers to reflect on this complex relationship by combining aesthetic and conceptual depth in their works. In this context, we have brought together three contemporary artists whose works are exhibited at Bilsart Shop and who place the human-nature relationship at the center of their artistic practices.

Artists focusing on the human-nature relationship present this dynamic from different perspectives, offering viewers a space for profound contemplation. Merve Ünsal, for instance, adopts a “nomadic” approach in her art practice, documenting structures and dynamics formed in different geographies. Ünsal explores the distinction between the artificial and the natural through physical boundaries, visualizing this theme in her video works. She uses spaces resembling apocalyptic scenarios as an allegory to emphasize the supremacy and dominance of nature.

Similarly, Didem Erbaş examines the power dynamics between humans and nature in her works. Erbaş provides clues that nature is the true master of the Earth, suggesting that nature will eventually surpass human-made constructs and regenerate itself after destruction. Her works convey the cyclical power of nature and its ability to endure despite human intervention.

Another prominent name in photography, Ci Demi, focuses on the problems of cities and their relationship with nature by using the contrast between organic and inorganic elements. Ci Demi presents a perspective that questions the sociological structures, cultural dynamics, behaviors, and connections with nature in urban settings. In his photos exhibited in the Bilsart Shop selection, he draws attention to nature-induced disaster scenarios, inviting viewers to contemplate the potential consequences of these scenarios.

The works of these artists stand out among those highlighting the complexity of the human-nature relationship and the supremacy of nature. Through aesthetic language, they address the conflicts, points of harmony, and transformation processes within this relationship, demonstrating that nature is not only a resource but also a field of power and resistance. Conceptual and contemporary disciplines, especially video and photography, create a space that redefines the stories of nature and humanity.
